The City of Surprise's Honoring an Exceptional Leader Task Force, charged with helping to recognize community members who have contributed to the betterment of the city, has embarked on its latest project to honor the memory of former city director Mark Coronado.
During a recent meeting, the task force examined ways in which the city could best honor the memory of Mark Coronado who served as the city's community and recreation services director. Coronado, who passed away nearly six months ago, began serving as director in 2000. During his leadership, Coronado is credited with helping the CSR grow into managing all recreational programming for the city, city parks, aquatics, community/sports, recreational facility development, library services, tourism special events, spring training operations, and national/international tennis events.
The task force has complied a list of several options for the Surprise City Council to review regarding how to best honor Coronado. Those options include renaming 8-Acres Park after Coronado, along with placing a memorial plaque at the park's entrance and naming a suite at Surprise Stadium after the late director.
The task force also included in its recommendations the placement of an honorary street sign for Coronado along Bullard Avenue, however the official street name would not change or impact physical addresses.
